Learning just enough calligraphy technique to write your wedding place cards isn’t as difficult as you might think. You’ll soon be writing your wedding place cards with confidence! Calligraphy is ‘the art of beautiful writing’ and with a bit of practice, a good pen and a steady hand, you’ll soon be writing lovely place cards. Read on for our quick tips to get you started:
First of all, make sure you have the right equipment. This doesn’t mean anything expensive or complicated. You’ll need plenty of spare place cards, a selection of pens in the right colours, and some lined paper to practice on.
Find a pen you’re comfortable with. It doesn’t have to be a calligraphy pen – we’re aiming for nice handwriting rather than a calligraphy masterpiece. Choose a great colour (vibrant pink ink is more fun than black!).
Familiarise yourself with key letter shapes. On lined paper, write rows of letters until they look the same every time. Start with l, n, m, u and h. Move on to o, c, a and e. Then practice all the other letters of the alphabet. For a real calligraphy effect, add serifs (starting and ending strokes) to all your letters. It makes all the difference, especially with a calligraphy pen.
At first your letter shapes will be different sizes, will lean slightly differently and look messy. After a few goes, you’ll gain confidence and repeat shapes accurately. Just stay slow and steady. When you’re happy with the letters, write your name a few times and go fetch your wedding place cards!
Use your ruler and pencil to draw a faint line where you’re going to write names. You can rub it away when the ink is dry (leave it about 24 hours to be sure). Use the letter shapes you’ve practiced, and take it slowly. Write with confidence and your place card calligraphy will look fab!
More expert tips:
The stronger the colours you use, the better your place cards will look. Use dark pens on white and ivory, or silver on black, or bright gel pens on darker shades of card.
Confidence is the key to beautiful writing. Enjoy yourself! If your letters are a bit wobbly, add a paper flower or bow, a heart or butterfly embellishment to cards to create a new focal point.
